Membrane distillation: recent technological developments and advancements in membrane materials

Abstract Membrane distillation (MD) is a novel desalination technology that has potential to produce distilled quality water from high salinity brine streams. The driving force for MD the vapor pressure difference across hydrophobic membrane resulting in transfer of hot cold side. This contacts surface and condenses distillate. paper reviews recent and/or multi-year research programs focused on pilot or field testing. various investigations concluded while can quality, energy efficiency remains key bottleneck future deployment MD. wetting fouling also presents challenges due both presence organics feed water. authors contacted several vendors requesting updates their latest products developments. with innovative module designs, some which promise step change performance, have recently emerged market. In addition desalination, wide range industrial applications such as hydrogen sulfide removal, treatment wastewater pharmaceutical, metal finishing industries, direct sewer mining, oily wastewater, recovery flue gas. chemistries emphasis membranes prepared by phase inversion electrospinning techniques nanomaterials been added. primary objectives adding (e.g., carbon nanotubes, graphene, silicon dioxide, fluorinated compounds) are increase hydrophobicity (to reduce wetting) mass rates flux lower cost).
